- Current and Voltage Requirements: Always derate from datasheet maximums. Environmental factors (temperature, altitude) reduce capacity.
- Environmental Conditions: IP rating requirements, temperature range, chemical exposure, vibration levels.
- Mating Cycles: How often will the connector be connected/disconnected? Consumer products need maybe 100 cycles; test equipment might need 10,000+.
- Size and Density: Available space, wire gauge, number of circuits needed.
- Industry Standards: Automotive often mandates specific connector families. Aerospace requires MIL-SPEC qualified parts.
- Cost and Availability: Exotic connectors may perform better but cost more and have longer lead times. Sometimes "good enough" is the right answer.
