Potting FAQ
Potting encapsulates electronics and cable assemblies in a protective compound. It provides environmental sealing against moisture, dust, and chemicals; vibration and shock protection; electrical insulation; and thermal management.
We use epoxy (rigid, high protection), polyurethane (flexible, good for thermal cycling), and silicone (high temperature, soft). Material selection depends on operating conditions, flexibility needs, and temperature requirements.
Generally, potting is permanent and potted components cannot be easily accessed. For assemblies that may need service, we can design in replaceable modules or use softer potting materials that can be removed if necessary.
We use vacuum degassing to remove air from potting compounds before and during cure. This eliminates voids that could cause electrical breakdown or allow moisture intrusion.
